Vodafone introduces money transfer service in Qatar
A mobile remittance system which will help migrants in Qatar to send money home has been introduced by Vodafone.
The service, called Vodafone money transfer allows customers in Qatar to make international money transfers directly from their mobile phones. At the moment, transfers are only possible between Qatar and the Philippines, but the system, which has been developed in association with Doha bank and Glob Telecom, will soon be improved to allow transfers across the whole of Asia, Africa and the Middle East.
The service is largely intended for expats in Qatar, who make up around three-quarters of the population. Most come from South Asia, and often send some of their income home to their families and friends. Over 200,000 expats in the country come from the Philippines.
